Knowing how to store motorcycle trousers takes one evening at the end of the season and saves a lot of annoyance in spring. Put away damp, crushed under a pile of gear or left in a sweating garage, a good pair comes out musty, creased and stiff to zip. Put away clean, dry and hung up, it comes out ready to ride. Here is the whole end-of-season routine, from the last wash to the first ride of the new year.
How to Store Motorcycle Trousers: Prepare Them First
Preparation matters more than the storage spot. Sweat, grime and trapped moisture do their damage slowly, so deal with them before the trousers go away.
- Wash them if they need it. Follow the care label; our guide to cleaning motorcycle riding trousers covers the method step by step.
- Dry them completely. Hang them indoors or in the shade until pockets, waistband and hems are bone dry. Direct sun and radiators fade colour and stress the fabric.
- Empty every pocket. Keys, coins and receipts stretch seams and hold moisture.
- Close everything up. Zip the pockets and vents and fasten the ankle cuffs or hem tabs. On the RoadVault cargo motorcycle trousers, that means the zipped vent panels and the adjustable ankle cuffs.
Hang, Fold or Roll? Where to Keep Them
Hang them if you can. A clip hanger lets the legs drop straight, so no hard crease forms across the knees or seat and air can move around the fabric. If space forces you to fold, fold once, loosely, and keep the trousers on top of the pile. Avoid tight rolls and heavy gear on top, because a sharp crease is hard to remove from technical fabric.
The spot matters as much as the method:
- Cool, dry and ventilated: a wardrobe or spare-room rail is ideal.
- Out of direct light: sunlight fades colour over the months.
- Away from fuel and oil: fabric picks up smells, so keep it out of the workshop corner.
- Not in a sealed bag: airtight plastic traps moisture. Use a breathable cotton cover if you want to keep dust off.
An unheated garage is the risky option. If yours sweats in winter, take the trousers indoors.
Storing Denim, Nyco and Technical Polyester
Every fabric copes with a winter in the wardrobe, but each has its own weak point.
Stretch denim
Denim is cotton, and cotton holds on to moisture. The Redback motorcycle jeans pair stretch denim with a mesh lining, so make sure both are fully dry before they go on the hanger.
Nyco
Nyco is a nylon-cotton blend, and the Sentinel trousers add a water-repellent finish. Keep the cotton dry and out of direct light so the colour lasts; our guide to camo and olive motorcycle trousers covers colour care.
Technical polyester
Polyester dries faster than cotton, but zips and vents still need to be clean, dry and closed. The RoadVault shell is high-tensile technical polyester, so hang it and close its vents like any other pair.
Your Spring Check Before the First Ride
When the season starts again, spend ten minutes on the trousers before you trust them on the road.
- Air them out for a few hours indoors or in the shade.
- Try them on with your boots and riding layers, then bend your knees as if seated on the bike. Waistband, knees, seat and hems should all sit where they did.
- Run every zip end to end and fasten every closure. A sticky slider is easier to sort out in the garage than at the roadside.
- Look over seams and panels for loose stitching or thin, shiny patches. If you find any, our list of signs that riding trousers are worn out helps you decide between repair and replacement.
- Test the water-repellent finish by sprinkling a little water on the fabric. If it beads, all is well; if it soaks in, refresh the finish before the first wet ride.
Common Questions
Should I hang or fold motorcycle trousers for winter?
Hang them if you can, on a clip hanger by the hem or waistband, so the legs fall straight and no hard crease forms across the knees or seat. If you have to fold, fold once and loosely, and keep heavy gear off the top.
Can I store motorcycle trousers in the garage?
Only if the garage is dry and ventilated, without fuel or oil fumes. Hang the trousers off the floor and out of direct light. If the garage is damp or sweats in winter, keep them indoors in a wardrobe or spare room.
Do I need to wash motorcycle trousers before storing them?
If they are dirty or sweaty, yes. Grime and sweat set over the months and can leave a musty smell that is hard to shift. Wash them following the care label and dry them completely before they go away.
