Chain lube does its job on the chain, then leaves a dark, greasy mark on whatever it touches next, which is usually your trousers. If you are wondering how to get chain lube out of trousers without ruining a good pair, the answer is to act early, lift the grease before you wash, and keep heat away until the mark has gone. This guide covers the method, what not to use, and how to stop it happening again.
Why Chain Lube Ends Up on Your Trousers
A freshly lubed chain throws off tiny droplets as it spins, and the lower leg on the chain side, usually the left, is the nearest thing to catch them. Overspray while you apply the lube, and a brush against a greasy chain or swingarm as you get on or off, do the rest.
The marks are rarely deep, but grease attracts road dust and darkens the longer it sits. If the same trousers also work as everyday wear, as in our guide to casual motorcycle trousers that look normal off the bike, a greasy shadow shows more at a café table than in a garage.
How to Get Chain Lube Out of Trousers, Step by Step
Treat the mark before the trousers go anywhere near a washing machine. Fresh marks lift far more easily than old ones.
- Blot, do not rub. Lift the excess with kitchen paper. Rubbing pushes the grease deeper into the weave.
- Absorb it. Cover the mark with cornflour, baking soda or talc and leave it for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for an older mark. Then brush the powder off.
- Pre-treat it. Work a drop of washing-up liquid into the mark with a soft brush or a fingertip, wait 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse from the back of the fabric so the grease is pushed out, not through.
- Wash as the label says. Our guide to how to clean motorcycle riding trousers covers the cycle, the detergent and what to leave out.
- Check before you dry. Hold the area up to the light while it is still damp. If a shadow remains, repeat the steps. Heat sets grease into the fibres, so keep the dryer and the iron away until the mark has gone, and let the trousers air dry.
Old Marks and What Not to Use
An old mark needs patience, not a harsher product. Repeat the powder and washing-up liquid for a second round, or try a grease stain remover if the care label allows it. Skip petrol, white spirit and brake cleaner: they are flammable and can strip colour and damage the fabric. Whatever you use, try it first on a hidden spot such as the inside of the hem.
How to Keep Chain Lube Off Your Trousers Next Time
Most marks start with how the chain is lubed. Follow the lube maker's instructions, which usually mean a warm chain, lube on the inside of the lower run and a wipe to remove the excess, then a short wait before you ride. Do chain jobs in an old pair of trousers, not the pair you ride to work in.
Then close up the hem so there is less loose fabric near the chain. The RoadVault cargo trousers have adjustable ankle cuffs that sit cleanly over the boot, and the Sentinel has a hem that adjusts from 32 to 46 cm and fits over any boot.
Colour will not stop grease, but it changes how much you see. Black hides oil and chain grease better than any lighter shade, which makes it the easy choice for a pair you ride in every day. The Redback riding jeans come in black, and our guide to black or blue motorcycle jeans compares how each colour ages. Mid-blue shows oil as darker marks, and sand and grey show it soonest, so a pale pair such as the Sentinel in sand deserves extra care around the chain.
Common Questions
Will chain lube come out of black jeans?
Usually, if you treat it early. Powder, washing-up liquid and a wash as the label says lift most fresh marks from denim, and black hides any faint shadow that is left. A mark that has been through a dryer is much harder to shift.
Can I use petrol or white spirit on a chain lube stain?
No. Both are flammable, the smell lingers in the fabric, and they can strip colour or damage the weave. Washing-up liquid cuts grease without those problems.
Should I wash the whole pair for one mark?
Treat the mark first, then spot-clean the area and rinse it well. Wash the whole pair only when it is due, as the care label says. Washing an untreated mark often leaves a shadow behind.
