Motorcycle Trousers Riding Up? Why It Happens and How to Stop It

Motorcycle trousers riding up is one of the most common fit complaints, and it is rarely the fault of the trousers alone. You pull them on, they look fine, then you sit on the bike and the hems climb away from your boots, leaving your shins open to wind and spray. This guide explains why it happens, then gives you four fixes in the order worth trying: leg length, hem control, cut and fabric, and a quick seated test.

Why Trousers Climb Your Legs the Moment You Sit

Standing, your knees are straight. On a bike they are bent to a right angle or more, with your feet forward on the pegs. The cloth over the front of the knee has to stretch around that bend, and it borrows length from the leg to do it, so the hem is dragged upwards. A pair that touches your boot when you stand can lift clear of it once you are seated.

Four causes account for most cases:

  • A leg that is too short for your inseam, so there is no spare length to lose.
  • A tight thigh or knee with no slack, so every bend pulls the leg up.
  • A wide, loose hem that slides straight up over the boot top.
  • Stiff fabric that cannot follow the knee, so the hem takes the strain.

Most riders have more than one, so a single fix often only half works.

A deep bend like this is the stress test: the hem has to stay with the foot while the knee folds.

How to Stop Motorcycle Trousers Riding Up: Start With the Leg Length

Leg length is the first thing to check because it is the one cause nothing else can cure. Put on the boots you ride in and measure a pair of trousers that already fit you well, from the crotch seam to the hem. That inseam, not your waist size, tells you which length to buy.

Choose the length as well as the size. The Redback riding jeans come in three leg lengths (76, 81 and 86 cm inseam), so the hem sits right in the riding position instead of climbing the shin. If you are tall, our tall trouser guide shows how to compare your inseam with the lengths on offer. When you fall between two lengths, lean towards the longer one if the hem is adjustable, because a long leg can be tightened but a short one cannot be stretched.

Close the Hem Over the Boot

Even the right length needs a hem that stays put. A wide opening slides up as the leg bends, while one that closes down around the boot has little room to travel. The RoadVault cargo trousers have adjustable ankle cuffs that sit cleanly over the boot, and the Sentinel motorcycle trousers have an adjustable hem from 32 to 46 cm that fits over any boot.

Your boots matter too. Boots tall enough to overlap the hem give it a lip to rest on, while low shoes leave little overlap, so test the pair with the footwear you actually ride in. Our guide to wearing motorcycle trousers over boots or tucked in covers when each option works.

A strap at each hem draws the opening in around the boot, so there is less loose cloth to slide up.

Choose a Cut and Fabric That Move With Your Knees

If the legs are the right length and the hem is closed down but the trousers still climb, look at the thigh and knee. Cloth with no slack drags the whole leg upward with every bend. Stretch fabric gives that slack: RoadVault has 4-way stretch that works in the riding position, Sentinel uses a Nyco stretch fabric with an ergonomic cut, and Redback is stretch denim. Our slim fit vs relaxed fit guide shows how a roomier thigh helps, and if you are between two sizes, take the larger one, because the trousers pull a little more in the riding position.

Then run the 60-second seated test before you commit:

  1. Put on your riding boots and the layers you will wear.
  2. Sit on the bike, or on a chair with your feet forward and your knees bent.
  3. Check the hem still covers the top of the boot, and nothing pulls at the thigh or behind the knee.
  4. Stand and walk a few steps to see whether the hem drops back on its own.

Common Questions

Why do my motorcycle trousers ride up when I sit?

Bending your knees takes length from the leg, so a hem that touches the boot while you stand can lift once you are seated. A short leg, a tight thigh, a loose hem or stiff fabric makes it worse.

Can I stop motorcycle trousers riding up without buying a new pair?

Sometimes. Tighten any adjustable cuff, wear boots tall enough to overlap the hem and make sure the thigh is not pulling. If the leg is simply too short, only a longer leg length will fix it.

Are tight motorcycle trousers more likely to ride up?

Yes. With no slack at the thigh and knee, every bend drags the leg upward. Choose stretch fabric, and take the larger size if you are between two.
